Florence is located at the foot of the Northern Apennines where the borders of two regions of Italy – Tuscany and Emilia – converge. In 59 BC. a settlement of Roman veterans was founded on the site of present-day Florence, which was named Florentia (“blossoming”). It later became a town, which became the seat of a bishop in the fourth century. Florence then fell under Byzantine, Ostgoth, Lombard and Frankish rule. It is currently the capital of Tuscany.
